Contesting Online Survey
Survey Question

Current Survey Question
Do you plan to enter the CQ WW
DX Contest?
Recent Surveys
Recently the RDXC committee
reclassified P3F to
high
power from low power without
publicly
providing strong evidence
that any
infraction had occurred.
They
concluded was that the
contestant was
running HP on 80/40m but
not full-time, just 10
minutes here
and there without any
convincing
evidence. It appears they
used the RBN as their source
of information. Should the
RXDC
contest have
to publicly provide
convincing
evidence before
reclassifying a
station from LP to HP?

Randy, K5ZD, wrote a sidebar
titled "
Convergence and Change" in
the 2015
CQWW CW printed results in
CQ
magazine. He wrote that the
"convergence of personal
computers,
Internet access,
DX clusters, and CW Skimmer
have
changed the nature of
CW contesting". He goes to
say that it
is "more difficult to police
the line
between the
single operator working
alone and
those who are using the
assistance of DX spotting."
In light of this convergence
and
change is it time to
recombine SO and
SOA into a single category?

CQWW has added a Classic Operator Overlay "The entrant will use only one radio, no QSO alerting assistance, and may operate up to 24 of the 48 hours off times are a minimum of 60 minutes during which no QSO is logged. If the log shows more than 24 hours of operation, only the first 24 hours will be counted for the overlay score. The one radio must not be able to receive while transmitting." Will you enter this new 24 hour category?

Aging and Contesting
|
I, Like many others I would bet, am not aging as gracefully as I would like. One of the real side effects is the ability to keep my fat butt in the chair has diminished greatly.
Dec 8 2008 I was in a bad car crash (Guy hit me in drivers side door doing 55) and since then my ability to comfortably sit in front of the radio and focus for long periods of time isn't what it once was.
My mind is still there and in someways much sharper at contesting after all these decades of experience.
But that means nothing if the pain in your back and neck become too much to endure and force you off the air. Case In Point... Last year in both SS SSB & CW I pushed hard to break 1000Qs in each mode, work a sweep in each mode, and try and set new records in my section and division. I did will and met most my goals but had my neck pain not triggered forcing me off the air a few times I could have worked the full 24 hrs and maybe placed first rather than 3rd and 8th.
I can with meds go great guns for 4 to 5 hours but soon the neck muscles tense up and if I don't stop can trigger into a real bad combination headache (Migraine+stress+physical)which if not attended to can force me off the air for days.
I think with my disabilities I would still be competitive in the new "Classic" mode as it keep my attention limited to tuning, working, running rate, etc... all good things for someone who can run rate with the best but for shorter periods of time....
I hope the league adopts similar rules for those of us who life has been a bit bumpier than others but can still play for shorter periods of time.

Classic contesting
|
I like the idea of a single radio 24 hour contest. But,
many comments about an antenna class are ok, but you
would need too many categories. The best way to deal
with it would be to have categories by property size. 1/2
acre and less qth, 1/2 to 2, and more than 2. Most big
guns would automatically be the 2 or more category.
While most small residential hams with basic antennas
would fall into the first category. It still allows for good
design practice and competition to get the most from the
space you have.

Great idea as I usually dont have time to do the full 48 hours, and dont like competing against SO2R.

Basic or classic category
|
I love the idea of including antenna in the class. A great
antenna can get you more than going from 100 to 1kw
so why categories only for power? If there was a
category for 100 watts, 1 wire antenna or vertical (per
band is ok) I would operate most every contest. Its fun
to operate but more exciting if you can actually compete.

Change to antenna categories
|
I noted several comments about adding antenna categories so us "wire antenna types" aren't competing with the "big guns." While the Contest Manager for QRP ARCI, I implemented two antenna categories for ARCI contests: category a) wire antenna that is not rotatable OR a rotatable antenna that is NOT rotated and b) rotatable antennas that are rotated.
Makes a big difference and keeps those "big guns" inside their own space - heard lots of positive comments as the "little pistols" can now compete for certificates within their antenna 'domain'.

Excellent idea! I'll maybe even operate it with my "classic" stations, a Drake 2-B w/DX-60

Classic Contesting

Great idea, and I agree with both KT0DX and WN4AFP. Now, if there was just ONE MORE CLASS...a single antenna for 20m and higher mounted not higher than 35 meters above the ground. Competing with stacked beams up to 50 m in height is a huge advantage for those ops.

Great idea as now it will get me out of having to be in the same class with SO2R's

classic contesting

Wonderful idea. I enjoy the 'classic' mode. Every contester should try the classic mode to experience the essence of contesting. Here's what you need... 1 transceiver, wire/beam antenna, keyer (memory keyer is acceptable), logging only software (no sending from the keyboard), mic. Enjoy the contest.
